Training “Psychological Crisis in the context of University Residences and psychological first aid”

On the 13th and 18th of March, the training “Psychological Crisis in the context of University Residence and psychological first aid” took place in the Cantina Velha auditorium. The training was aimed at students who are part of the Resident Committees and at technicians from Serviços de Ação Social da Universidade de Lisboa.

Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) is implementing a Success and Dropout Reduction Program in Higher Education, financed by DGES, with the aim of stimulating the development of mechanisms to support the academic integration of new students and the promotion of their success.

Within the scope of this project, the “Team of integration facilitators in University Residences” was created, and Serviços de Ação Social da Universidade de Lisboa (SASULisboa) are integrated in it. This group will work in student residences with the aim of improving processes integration of new residents.

The first training action within the scope of this work, “Psychological Crisis in the context of University Residence and psychological first aid” took place on the 13th and 18th of March, in the Cantina Velha Auditorium, and was addressed to students who are part of the Resident Committees and the technical teams that accompany the residences.

The training aimed to provide tools to help support and monitor residents, as well as to identify and forward potential situations of maladjustment.

The course focused on the concept of psychological crisis and the guiding principles of support in this situation. The trainees acquired skills to identify signs and symptoms associated with psychological/psychiatric emergency situations – both in order to understand the main needs for immediate support, and to detect warning signs for referral, particularly in situations of anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation, psychotic crisis and addictive behaviors.
